John Motson retires from live TV commentating tonight at the Euro 2008 final between Germany and spain.

His biggest regret is not to have commentated on England in a World Cup Final or European Championship Final. In his opinion the best England player he has seen is Gazza.

How would have England got on in Euro 2008 finals?

In an article in The Sun there is a suggestion that England will need to do a lot of catching up to compete with our European counter parts. The gist of the article is that England have too many players with individual skill which is difficult to incorporate into a team structure. Further The Sun cites that Euro 2008 viewing figures show an unexpected level of interest in the tournament from England fans, apparently due to the "fantasy football, with tremendous forward movement, pace down both flanks and wonderful dribbling skills".

There is no mention of the "bore draw" between Spain and Italy.

Bored to tears?

The Sun goes on to imply that Gerrard and Rooney are uncoachable and criticise the lack of youth in the England team.

I found the article in The Sun annoying and was almost throw together for a slow football news day. What do you think? Please add your comments!

Croatia and Russia from England's Qualification Group reach the Euro 2008 Quarter Finals

Just shows how tough that qualification group was...... certainly in terms of the football...... it is not our place to speculate if England fan's would have won the "best fan make up" award!

It could have been England v Germany, not Croatia!

As per the lyrics of 3 lions 98:

It could have been all

Songs in the street

It was nearly complete

It was nearly so sweet

Forgive me for day dreaming, if England would have qualified in place of Croatia (they were in the same qualification group after all) then England would have played Germany today in Euro 2008. Rush hour would have started at lunchtime as English industry grinds to a halt to watch, so people could get home or to the pub to secure a seat to watch the biggest game of the qualification rounds. Plus it is unlikely Wayne Rooney would have got married today!

So to fulfil the daydream England would have won 2-1 :-)

It does add credibility to the ability of the Croatia team and takes away some of the pain felt by this England fan, but not this German!

England Climb Back Into Top 10

After three successful matches with Fabio Capello, England have climbed back into the top 10 of FIFA's rankings.
We are unlikely to keep this spot for long because three teams below us (Holland, Portugal and Romania) are in Euro 2008 and two of them are expected to go far.

Here are the top 20 teams:
  1. Argentina
  2. Brazil
  3. Italy
  4. Spain
  5. Germany
  6. Czech Republic
  7. France
  8. Greece
  9. England
  10. Netherlands
  11. Portugal
  12. Romania
  13. Cameroon
  14. Mexico
  15. Croatia
  16. Ghana
  17. Scotland
  18. Bulgaria
  19. Colombia
  20. Turkey

Who will be the next England Captain?

The current favorites are David Beckham, John Terry, Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand. It is intersting to see three of the "big four" English Premiership teams are represented. We'd be especially interested to hear the comments of fans from Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United. Do Arsenal fans see any advantage in not having a player in the England Captain running? Capello has it narrowed down to 2 candidates, who do you think he will pick?
